Biography for Banknote Collector

ErwinVDB

Due to my expat life and many business trips, starting in Korea in 2001, I have been collecting banknotes from all the places I visited.

At those days, I still gave the notes to my nephew, which I now a little regret, and there is no way to get them back (LOL).

One day, in 2006, I just had a quick look on a website called eBay, to see what the availability was of banknotes, to see which types there are and what the prices are.

Maybe this was the worst decision in my life to start buying notes from all over the world, maybe not, I still don't know. Since then, the train did not stop anymore, an interest became a hobby, a hobby became an addiction, and an addiction became an obsession.

Now, almost 8 years later, I am still buying like a fool, but I am so proud of what I have, and I am so eager to work on my databases and scanned files, and of course organizing the notes themselves, every single day.

I recently passed 77,000 notes in my collection, with of course many rubbish notes (call them "Banknote Lot fillers"), and quite some bundles, but I do have almost 11,000 different notes as per the Krause SCWPM Catalogs, not including the Specialized Issues, but including some rare notes I am proud of to have.

All notes of both Modern and General Issues Catalogs are manually put in a personal database, which makes it easy for me to see what I have and don't have, this file is linked to my main database. Of course, each new catalog revision gives me each year quite some additional work with all the new notes and revised price estimations. Currently, I am also adding the Specialized Issues.

Although, (one of) the problem(s) with Krause is and remains, like many will admit, that numbers are sometimes changing, mainly with the latest note issues, or that notes keep on missing, this is indeed a headache.

Luckily, then there was the Banknote Book, which I am a member of since 2.5 years.

This gives again more perspectives and eagerness in collecting banknotes, also more work again to keep up with Owen's numbering system. But, the Banknote Book reference numbers are solid and complete, just like the weekly country chapters and updates; and maybe the (only) guide to follow in the future.

Never the less, I keep on buying and organizing, I hope it was not a waste of time, health and/or money.
